The First Amendment famously protects three important American ideals:
- Freedom of Speech
- Freedom of Religion
- Freedom of Assembly
Unfortunately, in the name of freedom, certain liberals are looking to assault these freedoms. They have reportedly requested sermons from five local pastors in Houston to see if they contain “hate speech.” While they won’t have to turn over sermons, they will be required to turn over “speeches” they have made. This is going to have a chilling effect on free speech throughout the nation.
Freedom and the First Amendment
This case shows how insidious it can be when we begin passing “hate speech” laws and other such legislation. The problem becomes defining “hate.” Obviously, if someone calls for violence against a person or group of people, that would be a problem. Fortunately, we already have laws against such speeches. This additional legislation just seeks to silence critics of certain groups that traditionally have supported Democrats and liberal causes.
In the case of the gay men and women, Christianity teaches that such acts are sins. Is it hate to point that out? If so, then where does that line end? Is it then hate to point out that adulterers are sinning? What about murders? What about members of other religions? Far from hate speech, these Christians would likely argue that they love all people and want them to get to Heaven.
The fact that people might be offended by these sermons is not enough to begin arresting or intimdating these pastors. The government has no right to attempt to influence religions or pastors. The First Amendment doesn’t guarantee that everyone will agree with everything everyone says, only that everyone will have the free opportunity to speak their mind (and the freedom of religions to teach their doctrines without government influence). If we lose this, we lose the foundation upon which this Republic was built.
